EIP Autumn Meeting

Customer focus, e-democracy and reaching communities, Birmingham 25th October 2006

As first proposed at the summer meeting, workgroups are now setting out to develop detail that underpins all segments of the group’s agreed Framework.

The segment of the framework that still needs most exploration is the whole area of community focus and accessibility. How do we get beyond Citizens Panels and other well tried approaches to reach out to the hard to reach and other identifiable groups? What should the goals and targets be? What combination of new and old methods makes best sense?

e-democracy (interpreted in its broadest sense) clearly has much to offer. But how do we tie that into the customer function? And could local authority involvement invalidate the essential ground roots base of e-democracy forums? Is there a level of ‘being local’ that authorities simply cannot reach? Or should they be getting stuck in?

The objectives for the day are

This meeting continues the drive to develop underpinning detail for our framework and should be useful in its own right for all involved in getting closer to the community.

Birmingham is either equally awful or equally easy to reach but it is sort of central and we have found it reasonably convenient in the past. There is a direction map at
